About Accelerated Reader
Welcome to the Accelerated Reader (AR) program! You or your child may have several questions regarding this beneficial program. It is designed to promote reading and comprehension using our library and computer resources. Following are the answers to a few of the most common questions.
QUESTION: How will the Accelerated Reader program benefit our students?
ANSWER: Not only does this exciting program encourage students to read more and to read a greater variety of books, but studies have also shown that the program greatly improves test scores and helps develop higher order thinking skills. For example, at one school in Virginia Beach, reading comprehension scores went up 7 points after they had used the AR program for one year.
QUESTION: How does the Accelerated Reader program work?
ANSWER: Students select books from the list of over 2300 AR titles. After reading the complete, not a shortened version of that book, the student takes a quiz of 5-20 questions on a computer in the classroom, or in the library. Depending on the difficulty of the book and the success with which the student answers the questions, the student receives from ½ - 44 points. Each period top students and classes will be recognized with special parties.
QUESTION: How can I help my child benefit fully from this exciting program?
ANSWER: Explain the one time rule. Remind your child that he or she must carefully read the complete version of each book since he or she will only be allowed to take the test on a certain book ONE TIME. This also means if a student a book and took and AR test during a previous school year, that student will not be able to retake an AR test this year.
Help your child learn his or her password, and emphasize the importance of keeping the password secret.
Encourage your child to select AR books appropriate for his or her reading level, rather than select a book that is worth more points but is too difficult. Students will be motivated to read more when they do well on the quizzes.
AR tests are multiple choice. For students who are taking an AR question for the first time, parents could help them by practicing certain types of questions, such as negative questions and fill in the blank. Negative questions ask for the answer that does not fit, (i.e. All of these animals are good swimmers except_____) Some questions have blanks in the middle (i.e. Junie went to _____ after she left school).
In our library, the AR books are labels with colored stickers that indicate the reading level of the book. Color keys are posted throughout the library. Students may, of course, get books from the public library or other sources, as long as the unabridged version by the correct author is selected. Remember, our program does not include all the AR books listed at the public library.
QUESTION: Where can I see a list of AR books?
ANSWER: At the bottom of this page!
QUESTION: Does our school library have all the titles on the list at the present time?
ANSWER: Occasionally AR books are damaged or lost. We try to replace the books quickly if they are still available for purchase, and thanks to our PTA we acquire new AR quizzes every year.
QUESTION: Is there any other way I can help?
ANSWER: Volunteers are needed for numerous jobs such as monitoring AR testing and assisting with parties. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mrs. Imrich or Mrs. Cook at 471-5844 ext. 50061 or stop by the library.
QUESTION: When does AR begin this year?
ANSWER: AR usually begins in October and runs into May. See the library for exact dates.
Your child’s teacher or the library staff can answer any additional questions you may have. With your support, we know the Accelerated Reader program will reach new heights here at Rosemont Forest and will greatly benefit our students!
